In short: Japanese Walking is private by default. There is no account and we do not upload or store your personal data on any server. Your sessions, streaks, settings and any Health Data stay on your device. Health Connect access is optional, opt-in, and controlled by you.
This Privacy Policy explains what information the Japanese Walking
application ("the app", "we", "us") — package dev.sonle.japanese_walking —
accesses, collects, and uses, and the choices you have. By using the app you
agree to this policy.
1. Data controller & scope
The app is an on-device interval-walking coach. It has no user accounts, no login, and no backend that stores your personal information. All personal data described below is processed and stored locally on your device unless you explicitly choose to share a session summary yourself.
2. Health Data
The app can integrate with Android Health Connect (the successor to Google Fit) to track your walking activity. This integration is optional and opt-in: it is disabled until you turn it on and grant permission, and the app works fully without it.
How we access it
When you enable the Health Connect feature, the app requests read and write permission for the following Health Data types through Health Connect's standard permission screen:

What we collect and how we use it

Read data may include entries created by other apps. The step, calorie and workout totals shown on the dashboard are read from Health Connect and can therefore include activity recorded by other apps or devices that write to Health Connect on your phone.
We do not transmit, upload, sell, or share your Health Data. Health Data is read only to display on-screen totals on your device and is written only to your own Health Connect store. It is never sent to us or to any third party, and it is not used for advertising, marketing, or any purpose unrelated to the walking features described above. Health Data is not used to train or improve any machine-learning model.
Your control & revocation
- You choose whether to enable Health Connect and which permissions to grant.
- You can revoke access at any time in Health Connect → App permissions; the app stops reading and writing immediately.
- Data the app wrote to Health Connect can be deleted from within Health Connect.
- Uninstalling the app removes all locally stored data.
On devices running Android 14 and above, Health Connect is part of the system; on earlier versions it is a separate app you may be prompted to install. The app's use of Health Connect complies with Google Play's Health Connect permissions policy — it accesses only the data types needed for the features above.
3. Other on-device data
- Workout sessions, streaks, history & settings — stored locally (in app preferences) to show your stats and progress.
- Body weight (optional) — if you enter it, stored locally and used only to estimate calories for a session.
- Step count during a session — if you grant the Activity Recognition permission, steps are counted during a walk and shown/stored locally.
Removing the app deletes all of this data.
4. Permissions we request

5. Advertising
The free version of the app shows ads via Google AdMob. To serve ads, AdMob may use a device advertising identifier. AdMob's handling of that data is governed by Google's privacy policy: policies.google.com/privacy. Your Health Data is never used for advertising and is never shared with the advertising SDK. You can remove all ads by purchasing "Remove ads" or "Unlock Pro" from within the app.
6. Sharing a session
If you tap "Share" on a session summary, you choose the recipient and app (for example a messaging app). That action is initiated entirely by you; we do not share anything on your behalf.
7. Data retention & security
Because your data lives on your device, its retention is under your control — it persists until you delete the relevant records, clear the app's data, or uninstall the app. We hold no copy on any server. Data written to Health Connect is retained by Health Connect under your control.
8. Children
The app is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
9. Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or CCPA), you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal data. Because we do not hold your data on our servers, you can exercise these rights directly on your device: edit or delete records in the app, manage or revoke Health Connect permissions, or uninstall the app. For any questions, contact us below.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected here with a new "Last updated" date.
